MS Europa 2 Voyage 1430 - October 4-11, 2014

A mild climate and impressive coastlines with steep cliffs and sandy shores – the Black Sea, which was an inland, freshwater lake until the penetration of the Bosphorus, has a wealth of attractions. Enjoy the FREEDOM THAT TAKES YOU PLACES at sea when the EUROPA 2 heads through the Bosphorus to Sochi, the host city for the 2014 Winter Olympics and a VIP holiday resort – even President Putin has a dacha here. Follow in the footsteps of Roosevelt and Stalin when you visit Yalta with its famous Swallow’s Nest*. The university buildings in Sevastopol speak a modern language and the green cultural city of Odessa will draw you under its spell with its unique charm.

Highlights of this cruise:

  • Sochi: tropical plants in the botanical gardens* of this “Russian Nice”.
  • Yalta: out and about in the cosmopolitan “Pearl of the Crimea”.
  • World-famous sights: the Potemkin Stairs in Odessa.

*These arrangements are not covered by the cruise price. The on-shore activities listed are in the planning stage. Subject to changes

Day 1 - Istanbul/Turkey, departure 8:00 pm
Passage through the Bosporus, until approx. 10:00 pm
As the sun goes down over Istanbul, the EUROPA 2 sets a course for the Black Sea.
Day 2 - Relaxation at sea
During a day at sea, you can relax and get ready for the week ahead.
Day 3 - Sochi/Russia, 7:00 am – 2:00 pm
Sochi seems as though it were made for rest and recreation, with its exclusive health resorts, magnificent manor houses and extensive parks. In fact, the Mediterranean climate and mineral springs meant that this “Russian Nice” flourished around the turn of the century – allow yourself to be captivated by its charm on a city walking tour*. One of the many dachas* in the city was once home to Stalin. Today you can encounter a piece of history in its rooms, which have been kept just as they would have looked in Stalin’s day. A visit to the Matsesta spa is also impressive, as is a walk through the Caucasian National Park*. Your route will take you through dense boxwood and yew forests.
Day 4 - Yalta/Ukraine, 8:00 am – Midnight
The next day, Yalta awaits your visit. Walk along the promenade in the footsteps of the Russian aristocrats who adorned their favourite holiday resort with elegant buildings. In the midst of subtropical greenery, the southern Crimean coastline* will provide some unforgettable impressions. High above the cliffs is the lofty Swallow’s Nest, a landmark of the region. The Vorontsov Palace was where Churchill stayed during his negotiations with Roosevelt and Stalin. The Romanov palaces* are also steeped in history. With sophisticated turrets and opulent balconies, the French-style Massandra hunting palace was built by Tsar Alexander III. The rooms of the white Livadia Palace hosted the Yalta conference between the Allies. At a Russian tea ceremony in the Italian inner courtyard, you will get a feel for the palace’s intriguing past.
Day 5 - Sevastopol/Ukraine, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
In Sevastopol, the present rubs shoulders with the future. A city tour* will take you past modern university buildings and neoclassical cathedrals to the ancient ruins of Chersonesus. From the 16th century onwards, powerful Khans ruled over the Crimean Peninsula – in Bakhchisary* you can look inside the former seat of government. In the inner courtyard of this “garden palace”, you will come across a famous feature in stone: the Fountain of Tears that once inspired Pushkin.
Day 6 - Odessa/Ukraine, 7:00 am – 11:00 hrs
Succumb to the charm of Odessa as soon as you reach the port. The 192 steps of the Potemkin Stairs will take you straight up to the magnificent Primorsky Boulevard. A city walking tour* takes you to discover the highlights of this grand boulevard and to visit the Uspensky Monastery, with golden domes reflecting the sunshine. Or go down into the Odessa catacombs* to discover the quiet secrets of the city. In the evening, the curtain will rise in the neo-baroque opera house for a ballet performance* that is second to none.
Day 7 - Passage through the Bosphorus, 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm arrival in Istanbul/Turkey approximately 10:00 pm.
The next evening, you pass through the Bosporus and arrive at the stunning city of Istanbul. Enjoy one last night on board in the middle of this amazing bustling city.
Day 8 - Istanbul
Disembarkation.
