The Croatia Adriatic and the Magic of Venice: Valletta, Malta to Venice, Italy

MS Europa 2 Voyage 1424 - August 16-23, 2014

Your cruise on board the EUROPA 2 begins under the canopy of stars in Valletta, the capital of Malta, and heads towards the popular seaside resort of Sarande in Albania. In Butrint*, some 20 km further south, you will come across a “miniature Troy”. Alternatively, you could visit Gjirokastra*, one of the steepest towns in Albania, with stone buildings that look like strongholds. Your journey then takes you to the idyllic holiday destination of Dubrovnik. From here, you can explore the surprising “Tuscany of Croatia”, the valley of Konavle*, with its unspoiled scenery. Hvar is one of the most beautiful islands in Croatia, and Rovinj is your starting point for excursions to Pula* and Porec*, both places with great cultural heritage. Venice provides the impressive finale to your cruise, with its gondolas, canals and palazzi.

Highlights of this cruise:

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site – the ruins of Butrint* in Albania.
  • History brought to life – the historic city of Dubrovnik.
  • One of the most beautiful gems on the Croatian coast – the island of Hvar.
  • On board: a Venetian night.

*These arrangements are not covered by the cruise price. The on-shore activities listed are in the planning stage. Subject to changes

Day 1 - Valletta, Malta
Embarkation of the MS Europa.  You will be leaving the natural harbour of Valletta just as the first stars begin to appear in the night sky .  Departure at 9:00pm.
Day 2 - Relaxation at sea
Day 3 - Sarande (Butrint)/Albania - 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Enjoy your first day relaxing on board, before arriving in Sarande. This popular seaside resort is your starting point for exploring UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Butrint* lies on a peninsula in the middle of dense forest. The ruins of Greek temples, Roman bath houses and an early Christian baptistery are testament to the importance of this “miniature Troy” in ancient times. You can see an impressive example of Ottoman architecture on a scenic tour to Gjirokastra*. A walk through the “City of Stone” takes you past houses that look like fortresses to the citadel.
Day 4 - Dubrovnik/Croatia - 8:00 am to Midnight
Dubrovnik is the perfect holiday setting for the third day of your cruise. A walking tour* of the city will let you take in the Rector’s Palace, and the Franciscan monastery will give you an insight into the city’s mediaeval past. Take a stroll over the cobbled streets of the old town and make sure you don’t miss Stadun, Dubrovnik’s famous pedestrian street. Leave the usual tourist routes behind and visit the valley of Konavle* – an unspoiled landscape sometimes known as the “Tuscany of Croatia”, with ancient laurel trees and romantic bays. TEEN EXCURSION: Grab your paddles! On a kayak trip along the city walls of Dubrovnik*, you can look forward to some sporting fun.
Day 5 - Hvar/Croatia - 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Hvar is a real Mediterranean idyll and you can explore its rolling hills on an island tour* with views of the vineyards and fishing villages. Alternatively, cruise through the extensive network of islands in the Hvar archipelago on a boat trip to St Clement island*, which is a perfect place for swimming in crystal-clear waters. FAMILY EXCURSION: Abandoned villages, vineyards, sheep and plenty of lavender: We’ll be able to see all of these on our journey by all-terrain vehicle on Hvar. What a beautiful island!
Day 6 - Rovinj/Croatia - arrival 8:00 am
Enjoy a relaxing atmosphere in Rovinj as well, where a fascinating mix of Renaissance, baroque and neoclassical styles reflects the city’s interesting history. The former pirates’ hideaway is the perfect starting point for excursions to visit the surrounding area. You can go to Pula*, for example, which is the biggest city in Istria and boasts one of the largest Roman amphitheatres. Porec* also has a long cultural heritage and is a true gem of the Adriatic, with its ancient Roman street design and the Byzantine Euphrasius basilica. The old railway line, which used to link the city to Trieste, is now a great route for mountain bikes. A tour along the old Parenzana trail* will take you over bridges and viaducts and through impressive scenery.  CHILDREN’S EXCURSION: The Dinopark Funtana* near Rovinj is all about dinosaurs. You can see life-size dinosaurs set amidst stunning natural scenery.
Day 7 - Rovinj/Croatia - departure at 1:00 am - arrival in Venice/Italy at 8:00 am
Next morning you will be welcomed by a city, which for many visitors is the most beautiful in the world: Venice with its 400 or more bridges and countless palazzi right on the canals. The city's countless highlights include St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace* and the Basilica with its brilliant golden mosaics. You can explore a lesser known side of Venice on a walking tour of the Cannaregio district*. Allow yourself to be carried along with the everyday lives of the Venetians, visit the Jewish Ghetto and marvel at Tintoretto's frescoes in the Madonna dell'Orto church.
Day 8 - Venice/Italy
After one last night on board, take your memories with you on your journey home.
