History Brought to Life on the Adriatic: Venice, Italy to Valletta, Malta

MS Europa 2 Voyage 1425 - August 23-30, 2014

Late in the evening, the EUROPA 2 sets a course from Venice to Ravenna, which is particularly well known for its mosaics. On the next day, you arrive in Split, where you can visit Diocletian’s Palace and the historic city centre. The landmark of Mostar*, the Stari Most bridge, has been restored to its former glory, whilst Trogir and Salona* reveal their mediaeval and Roman pasts. Korcula was named after its black pine forests and the EUROPA 2 cruises into the Bay of Kotor, which extends far inland offering idyllic views of the countryside. Budva* is one of the oldest settlements on the Balkan Peninsula and was restored to its original form following destruction by an earthquake. The cathedral at Otranto is a masterpiece of Apulian architectural artistry and the “Florence of the South”, Lecce*, is a vision of baroque architecture. Your cruise will draw to a close in the natural port of Valletta.

Highlights of this cruise:

  • Superb mosaics*: cultural and historical discoveries in Ravenna and Otranto.
  • A Roman emperor’s retirement home and UNESCO World Heritage Site: Diocletian’s Palace in Split*.
  • UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site – the Bay of Kotor, Europe’s southernmost fjord.
  • On board: Muzika I Ples – Balkan music.

*These arrangements are not covered by the cruise price. The on-shore activities listed are in the planning stage. Subject to changes

Day 1 - Venice/Italy - Departure at 10:00 pm
Embarkation of the MS Europa 2 in Venice, Italy.
Day 2 - Ravenna/Italy, 8:00 am – 6:00
The EUROPA 2 glides out of the Venetian lagoon, taking you after your first night on board to Ravenna. The central Piazza del Popolo, with its typical Italian street cafes, is the ideal starting point for a stroll around this dreamy university city. Ravenna is best known for its mosaics*, which decorate the San Vitale basilica and the Galla Placidia mausoleum. The natural beauty of the region can be explored on a bicycle tour of the Po Delta nature park*. The unusual landscape is made up of ancient forests, sand dunes and marshlands.
CHILDREN’S EXCURSION: Look forward to plenty of fun rides: Mirabilandia* near Ravenna is Italy’s second biggest amusement park. If the weather is good, we will cool off at the water park.
Day 3 - Split/Croatia - 8:00 am to Midnight
Day 4 - Korcula/Croatia - 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
Korcula is also known as the “black island” thanks to its dark-green forests of pine trees, firs and holm oaks. The mediaeval town centre is surrounded by fortifying walls and sits on a promontory, with spectacular views over the water. An island tour* through fertile valleys and olive groves will also provide an opportunity to taste the region’s wines. Or you could opt for a fast-paced buggy safari*.  TEEN EXCURSION: A motorboat takes you to Lumbarda, where your mountain-bike tour* of Korcula begins. A great sporty way to discover the spectacular countryside and little villages.
Day 5 - Kotor/Montenegro, 8:00 am – 3:00 pm - Cruising the Bay of Kotor until approx. 5:00 pm
The voyage to Kotor on board the EUROPA 2 is also a truly unforgettable experience. The natural harbour lies at the end of the bay of the same name, which like a fjord cuts about 30 kilometres deep into the mainland. The narrow, winding alleys and Venetian palaces are well protected behind the mighty walls of the town. Near Kotor, you can also visit Budva*, one of the oldest settlements in the Balkans, which has an inviting atmosphere thanks to its citadel and beautiful squares and alleys. You can reach Stoliv* on foot. On the way there, you will be treated to fabulous views over the Bay of Kotor. Or simply relax on Jaz beach* with its crystal-clear waters.  FAMILY EXCURSION: From Kotor, you will visit the Lovcen adventure park*, where seven routes with various levels of difficulty take you to heights of nearly 15 metres through the forest. We’ll be whizzing down steel cables, climbing over tree trunks and crawling through tunnels.
Day 6 - Otranto/Italy - 8 :00 am to 6:00 pm
Italian charm, an idyllic location and historic heritage all come together in Otranto, making this a wonderful holiday destination. Take a walk* along the harbour promenade, where you can try the popular Affogato al caffe and visit the impressive cathedral – with its portico, frescoes and mosaics, it is a masterpiece of Apulian architectural artistry. Lecce* is a testament to the baroque period. On a visit to the cathedral and the – Santa Croce church, you will be enchanted by this magnificent “Florence of the South”, before your cruise draws to a close in the natural harbour at Valletta, Malta’s picturesque capital.
Day 7 - Relaxation at sea
Day 8 - Valletta/Malta, arrival 4:00 am
