Ushuaia (Argentina) Round trip
November 19-29, 2014
11 days / 10 nights on board

  • Tabletop icebergs, growlers, drift or pack ice… the Antarctic has its own language, which you’ll soon speak fluently!
  • We are offering you a chance to sail through the Heart of the Peninsula who offers travellers an enchanting polar desert, a final frontier surrounded by a gigantic ice sheet.
Day & Port

Arrival

Departure
Day 1 – Ushuaia (Argentina)

Embarkation from 5.00pm to 6.00pm.

Regarded as the world’s southern-most city, Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego in the extreme South of Argentina at the end of Beagle Bay. This amazing little town of over 45,000 people is surrounded by mountains and fertile plains. The first inhabitants here were nomadic hunters and gatherers who arrived on foot to the Isla Grande over 10,000 years ago. Nature lovers will be bowled over by the Tierra del Fuego National Park and its amazing wealth of flora and fauna: beavers, albatrosses, guanacos, penguins… Here forests cover the slopes of the Andes mountains then give way to snow-capped peaks… a truly unique and unforgettable landscape.

4:30 pm

6:00pm

Day 2 – At sea – Drake Passage

To reach the mythical «White Continent» you will cross the notorious Drake Passage named after the famous explorer, Sir Frances Drake, who sailed in these waters way back in 1578. You will then traverse the Polar Front which marks the area where waters from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans meet.

Day 3 – At sea – Drake Passage

Day 4 – Neko/Paradise Bay (Antarctica)
Deep in Andvord Bay, we find this little corner of paradise at the foot of an immense glacier. Neko Bay is without doubt one of the most beautiful sights of the Antarctic Peninsula. Wildlife is as abundant as it is exceptional: sea birds such as gulls, Cape Petrels and Cormorants, as well as marine mammals like seals, orcas and whales. Excursions aboard our Zodiac® dinghies allow you to sail close to blue-tinged icebergs or disembark near colonies of penguins, observe leopard seals basking on the shore or watch the Antarctic Terns flying overhead.

Day 5 – Pleneau Island/Port Charcot(Antarctica)

Day 6 – Port Lockroy (Antarctica)

On the small island of Goudier, you will have the opportunity to visit Port Lockroy, discovered by the French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot in 1903. Initially it served as a relief and repair base for whalers, but in 1944 Port Lockroy became a British base. It owes its name to Edouard Lockroy, a French politician and the partner of Jean-Baptiste Charcot during his expedition. You will be able to visit the small museum that retraces the life of the base in the 1950s. Since 1996, it has been open to the public during the short Southern Summer and is used for carrying out research on Gentoo Penguins.  Nowadays, this base is the most visited site of the White Continent and, thanks to its little store and post office, it is the only place to offer you the opportunity to write to your friends and family and share this unique moment.

Day 7 – Deception Island (Antarctica)
Nestled at the heart of the South Shetland Islands, in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula, Deception Island is easy to recognise for its horseshoe shape. On the black sand of the volcanic beaches, there are remains of abandoned huts that have been overrun by the extraordinary wildlife, part of the treasure that Nature offers us there. It is on these beaches of ash that the largest colony of Chinstrap Penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula has taken up residence. Excursions aboard our Zodiac® dinghies will allow you to set foot on this expanse of land where more than 100,000 pairs of penguins, Elephant Seals and Fur Seals live side by side.

Day 8 – The Weddell Sea (Antarctica)
A lengthy sail in the Weddell Sea will allow you to experience true silence, an extraordinary and enchanting atmosphere, unrivalled calm…You will discover a secret reserve of preserved treasure: Fur Seals, penguin colonies, Wandering Albatross and other giant Petrels. Here the huge icebergs and the endless ice cap sculpt a landscape beyond compare. The lord of the manor is known as the Weddell Seal. It is a record breaker, able to remain submerged for more than an hour. Its pelage is dark grey and it has a spotted belly. To maintain its access to the sea and be able to fish, the Weddell Seal has special teeth allowing it to make a hole in the thick ice.

SmallShips.travel | MS Fram | Polar Circle Expedition

Polar Circle Expedition

Buenos Aires – Ushuaia

Find yourself in an area of sublime beauty, sailing as far south as the Antarctic circle. The avid explorers joining us on this adventure will experience an area of Antarctica few others have laid their eyes on.

Departures:

January 28 – February 11, 2016
February 11 – 25, 2016

Itinerary

On these departures, due to available flight times, you will stay overnight in a first class Buenos Aires hotel. After check in, it’s possible to join an optional City Tour to explore. Your evening is at your own leisure. The next day, you begin your voyage!

Our voyage departs from the province of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the world – Ushuaia. Our flight leaves Buenos Aires in the morning which gives you a few hours to explore Ushuaia, the southernmost town in the world. The flight duration is approximately 4 hours. Our local representatives will greet you at Ushuaia airport. Transfer to the pier, including an orientation tour of Ushuaia or possibility to join an optional excursion to Tierra del Fuego National Park. Time permitting you will have a chance to explore Ushuaia on your own before embarkation at 16:00.

Cruise-only guests:
Please present yourself at the pier for embarkation at 16:00h

Once onboard there will be a welcome meeting during which the Captain will present his officers and expedition staff, and outline the program for the coming day. There will be conducted a mandatory safety drill for all passengers before departure.

In the evening we set a course through the scenic Beagle Channel for the Drake Passage and Antarctica.

The Drake Passage is where the Atlantic and Pacific meet the Great Southern Ocean to create the Antarctic Convergence. During the crossing you can enjoy our onboard lecture series to learn more about the wonders of Antarctica. The Antarctic Convergence is the where the warmer waters of the north meet the colder, denser, less saline waters of the south. As the colder water sinks, a mixing occurs that brings nutrients to the surface and makes the area particularly rich in marine life.

In addition to spotting for the magnificent wandering albatross and other seabirds, the crossing features our lecture series focusing on the history, environment, and wildlife of Antarctica. Our series includes a thorough introduction to the Antarctic visitor guidelines from the Antarctic Treaty and International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO).

The Antarctic Treaty regulates all activities in Antarctica and has created a continent of peace and science. Hurtigruten ASA is committed to meeting and exceeding all Antarctic Treaty and IAATO regulations to ensure that the vulnerable environment will not be disturbed.

We will be on course for the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands where we hope to arrive on the afternoon of day 3.

The continent is an endless white wilderness full of fantastic vistas of nature. We will learn the history of the great explorers as we travel in their footsteps and see the landscape as they saw it – unchanged, remote, and awe inspiring. While in Antarctica, we will attempt to land on several sites, some of them described below as examples. On land, our expedition team will explain what you see and help you avoid disturbing nature and wildlife. When conditions allow hikes or other activities on land and sea may be offered. Participation on any hike requires a good level of fitness, and that you are accustomed to hiking in uneven terrain. Weather, wind, and ice conditions will determine our program and our schedule. Safety is always the first priority and the final sailing itinerary will be decided by the ship’s Captain during the voyage. On this special trip, we plan to cross the Polar Circle at 66°33’ south.

The Antarctic Circle

The Antarctic Circle is one of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth. It lies at latitude 66° 33′ 39″ south of the equator. The area south of the Antarctic Circle is known as the Antarctic, and the zone immediately to the north is called the Southern Temperate Zone. The equivalent line of latitude in the northern hemisphere is the Arctic Circle.

Along the Antarctic Circle there is one day each year during which the sun does not set, about December 22 (the summer solstice [first day of summer] in the Southern Hemisphere). Similarly, the sun does not rise above the horizon on approximately June 21 (the winter solstice). The number of days without sunset or sunrise increases with nearness to the South Pole. At the Pole there are six months of continuous darkness (about March 21 to September 23) followed by six months of daylight (September 23 to March 21).

With our bow pointed north and unforgettable images and experiences in our souls, we are invited to gain a new understanding of the Antarctic.

The voyage from the Antarctic Peninsula to Ushuaia at the southern tip of Argentina is roughly 950 km (600 mi) or 40 hours sailing time in good weather. During the voyage north, we will continue our lecture series and recap our experiences of Antarctica.

After spectacular Antarctica and its endless vistas, we make landfall at the world’s southernmost town. We arrive at the Argentinean town of Ushuaia in the morning. Ushuaia is counted as the world’s southernmost town and lies on Tierra del Fuego, south of the Magellan Strait and here our voyage ends.

Disembark after breakfast and there is the possibility to join an optional excursion in Ushuaia (with its end at the airport) or be transferred to the airport.  If time allows, we include a stop at the city center on our way to the airport. In the early afternoon you will board the flight back to Buenos Aires.
